    It would depend on the direction in which you want to go. If
    you want to show early applications of the scientific method,
    Sherlock Holmes stories or those stories featuring Jacques
    Futrelle's Professor S. F. X. Van Dusen, aka "The Thinking
    Machine," would be good.
