I would also agree that most HS courses (even elementary and
MS) do not TEACH writing. They may over teach the 5
paragraph essay format, but they rarely teach writing. They
GRADE writing, comment on writing, and edit writing; but
little teaching of writing is done. I honestly believe that
many do not realize there is a difference. Little time is
ever spent on the thinking process that needs to be done
prior to composing a paper. I also believe it is because few
know how to teach the thinking skills that are needed to
develop a competent writer.
