    Ah... the limitations of the multiple choice format. You are
    right to teach writing strategies in the context of writing.
    Don't conform your instruction to the CST in the form of
    canned benchmark practice. Teachers who micro-manage the
    standards wind up short-changing writing development.

    I do suggest extensive short paragraph practice, sentence
    revision, sentence combining, and direct grammar instruction,
    rather than concentrating exclusively on process papers and
    mini- lessons. Check out my Teaching Essay Strategies and
