I have seen effective use of the same lists for spelling and
vocabulary.
I have taught spelling, focusing on a spelling rule or phonics
sound each week. Many students need direct spelling
instruction. The key is to differentiate, teaching the kids
who need it and enriching those who need little instruction.
This year I moved the spelling component to my high school
Reading class.
When I teach vocabulary in my high school classes, I use
prefixes, roots and suffixes, then generate a list that focuses
on that week's word parts.
Read a lot on the topic at Mark Pennington Publishing blog.
