The purpose of the 'Step Back' is to have students reflect on
how they learned more than on what they learned. This emphasis i
helps students internalize the process of learning.
If you want to check the specific information they learned it
might be better to have them answer a specific question
like, "What is a theme?" on an exit sheet which they turn in
before they leave. This way you have a more accurate way to
measure if the students actually learned what you taught.
Good luck with your 9th graders. I have two classes of grade 9.
They sure can be hyper.
