I have a college-prep American lit. class for juniors and
seniors. I give them a reading calendar for each month that
requires them to read about 100 pages of an assigned novel
each week outside of class. Papers, I feel a lot more
comfortable having them write in class. If I don't see them
writing, I can't know who's doing the work. I've already
caught a couple copying and pasting in paragraphs from
websites. We usually spend two or three days in the lab as a
class for each essay.
Mine isn't a block class. We read five average-sized books in
a semester and write an essay for each one, along with an
essay connecting themes from two or more of the novels for
the final exam.
