Re: Is ESL A Shortage Area?
    Posted by lynne/ca on 7/02/08

Your question is a bit complicated. First of all, education in
California is experiencing budget cuts and in most districts
there aren't as many openings as there have been in previous
years. Many districts are cutting positions or not replacing
teachers who retire. The EdJoin site, www.edjoin.org, is good
for looking for openings and many districts require you to
apply through EdJoin. That will give you an idea of what's out
    there.
ELD instruction is required for all ELL students in California,
K-12, so ELD programs are very much alive and certainly not "on
the way out." However, nearly all districts require ELD
certification for every teacher now. Therefore, ELD
certification is likely to be required for any position you
apply for - but it WON'T make you stand out from everyone else.
At the elementary level, ELD is often taught by the regular
classroom teacher who teaches it as one of the daily subjects -
so you're less likely to find elementary school positions
    for "ELD teacher" per se.
Your best bet is probably to teach ELD or English or both at
the middle school or high school level, or Spanish at the high
school level. ELD positions usually require certification in
both ELD (CLAD certificate) and English (single subject English
credential). I believe the ESL certification from Michigan is
valid in California IF you received it after 1997, and your
English and Spanish certification may be accepted in California
if you've been teaching longer than two years and can provide
proof of your experience, certification, and passage of a basic
skills exam. (For any of these, you would need to submit proof
and application fees to the California Commision on Teacher
Credentialing - website and info below). If not, you may need
to take California exams: CBEST (for basic skills), CSET (for
English and/or Spanish), and CTEL (for ELD).
    Good luck!
