Re: Push-in model
Posted by jeanius on 5/15/08

I have both Parapros and Certified staff doing push-in models
and it can easily turn into glorified teaching assistant role
if you don't have a plan for otherwise.

We have specific ESL programs that the Paras do with the kids.
Teachers know they are coming in with a lesson plan and
specific goals. Sometimes they try to coordinate lesson
plans, and yes, sometimes it ends up being a homework helping
time, but we have made it very clear that our funding is
specifically for supplementing our students with language
    development support.

Our certs have worked really hard to create a more
"co-teaching" situation when push-in is being used. They plan
lessons with the classroom teacher and may even teach a
segment of the whole group lesson in order to emphasize
language, vocabulary or concepts using GLAD or SIOP
strategies. Most teachers are ok with this, some are
uncomfortable sharing their pulpit, but again, we state our
goals for our students and our intentions - not to take over
the class, but to add ESL enhancements.

This is an on-going process of collaboration and
trust-building, but it really is better for kids if they can
be served in the regular classroom rather than pulled out.

Oh - we cluster our kids into 1-2 classrooms per grade level
to help with serving schedules- no more than 4 ESL kids per
class with a teacher who is willing to take training and work
with our ESL teacher. This has worked well over the years as
teachers become specialists themselves in differentiating for
    ELLs.
