    Re: Bilingual 1st grade
    Posted by Curious on 7/02/08

Why would they call your class "bilingual first grade" if
the children's native language is never used? Your
description sounds more like a self contained ESL or
transitional ESL class to me. In this case, use many
gestures, visual cues, pictures, vocabulary building
activities etc. A good resource is the book: "50 Strategies
for Teaching English Language Learners" by Adrienne L.
Herrell and Michael Jordan. It comes with a DVD that
demonstrates some of the strategies. Use a lot of
cooperative groups to encourage oral communication in low
anxiety situations. Since you are teaching first graders you
can use songs, poems and chants to develop English language
    skills in a fun way.
