    Post: Long silent period

    Posted by lynne/ca on 9/01/08

We have a student in his third year in the US, testing at
Intermediate level in English, who refuses to speak. He is
new to our school but went to a school in a nearby county
for the last two years. His written work is excellent. He
reads aloud clearly and with a "normal" voice. But for
initiating his own communication he relies exclusively on
gestures (which he's amazingly good at). When classwork
requires him to speak he will do it but in a VERY quiet
    whisper.
Because of his written work I know that his productive
language is good, and because of his oral reading I know
that his pronunciation (and his ability to speak in a
normal voice) are good. We're not sure what to do at this
point. I feel like he could progress by leaps and bounds
if he were to start speaking, but he's been getting along
pretty well without it because he's so good with gestures,
and you can't force a student to talk. Has anyone else had
this situation? What did you do?
