Some kids who are designated ESL have very high oral
language skills, but low reading comprehension. Others can
be just the opposite. The ones repeating K are probably in
the first category.
Please do not take away recess to do ESL with the kids. It
is an excellent opportunity for them to hear and practice
their English with other children.
With the repeaters, you probably need more work with
phonemic awareness. Are they primarily Spanish speakers? If
so, concentrate on vowel sounds, since those prove to be
rather difficult for these students. Work on sight words
and reading comprehension. Ask a lot of questions and
provide A LOT of background information when reading
stories. For example, with my crew of K/1 ESL, a read aloud
might take twice as long with me as it would in a mainstream
class.
