I never use any language other than English in my classroom. It
is my responsibility as a teacher to make sure that I present
the materials in such a way with as many repetitions and
modalities as possible so that the students will understand.
The only time I would use anything other than English is when
there is a major meltdown from frustration and then it would not
be to teach only to find out what is going on.
It would be impossible to be able to use L1 for all of my
students and to do so for just one language group would be
taking time away from the other language groups.
I have found that my students do learn English very quickly and
I believe it is because I don't get caught up in teaching
content as the principle thing. I stick with teaching language
first and then add the content as I can.
