I just went to a writing training. Several of the mentor texts provided use words such as: ya for you; 'cause for because; goin' for going, etc. What are your thoughts about using such texts with ESOL students?

T They need to know it!! I moved to Colombia after meeting my partner after study abroad. we live here but, STUDENTS must know the slang they must know how things truly work. They must also know the proper way of doing things. with that in mind they must see both sides. If I did not know Colombian slang I would not survive here

ESL in Kazakhstan This is casual, informal English that English language learners are going to encounter. Should it be in the texts? Perhaps not. However, I think it's important to make students aware of such language and how to use it properly.
