Glenn Beck on Fox News was attacking the teaching profession
on the news yesterday. I was so upset that I actually sent
him an email. This is what I sent him. If his verbal
attacks on teachers upset you, maybe you should send Fox
News or Glenn Beck an email.
I am a National Board Certified Teacher in IL. I am half
way through my Masters of Education in Reading and Literacy.
I teach in a Title One School in IL, and I am a highly
qualified Teacher. I was very offended by your comment
about teachers who do nothing in the classroom, and that
teachers should not receive tenure.
The facts that you stated on the air were not accurate. You
didn't represent both sides of the issue.
It takes 5 years to reach tenure; which requires multiple
evaluations on your teaching performance. If the school
thinks you are an outstanding teacher, then after 5 years of
full-time teaching, you can receive tenure. You still can
get fired even if you have tenure. Tenure teachers still
continue to get evaluated for their teaching performance
ever year until they retire.
Tenure protects teachers and the students. If there was no
tenure, the school districts would fire teachers who began
to make too much on the pay scale to help save money,
regardless if they were excellent teachers or not. For
example... Mrs. Smith has a Masters Degree in Science and is
teaching for 15 years now, let's lay Mrs. Smith off and hire
someone fresh from college and save 20K. This is why tenure
is in place, so quality teachers are retained and protected.
Tenure also protects teachers from a political system of
Principal's firing teachers to hire their friends and relatives.
Did you know that 55% of teachers leave the profession
before 5 years of teaching, because they can't deal with the
demand and stress of the profession. I guess the pay and
summers off still couldn't keep them in the classroom.
Hmmmmm, I wonder why, since you said that the job was so easy.
Did you know that I don't receive a paycheck during the
summer? My last paycheck was June 9th and I won't receive
another paycheck until September. I have the summer's off,
because I don't get paid to teach in the summer.
Please stop bashing hard working teachers on your show.
