What state are you in? In California, only two years are
needed for tenure. However, during those two years the
teachers better kiss up and volunteer for everything. All
rights for probationary teachers were given away, when the
two year tenure program came. When I received tenure years
back, we had to have three successful years of teaching. If
a teacher was weak, during that time, people from the
district office came out to help the teacher succeed. If
they still failed after proper steps were taken, the
district could then be dismissed. NOW they don't even have
to state a reason. They can just tell the teacher he/she
won't be back.
In California, the teacher would have to do something illegal
to get fired. We have a couple of teachers one my staff who
happened to pass through tenure early on. They are
absolutely awful. My principal tried changing grade levels
on the one, but she filed a lawsuit. She is morbidly obese
and milks the handicap issue. The district just caved in and
she got her way. It's sad for tenure to protect such a
person who is really harmful to children.
Yet on the other hand, without tenure there's politics. They
certainly know how to use it out here. Under the current
system some outstanding teachers have been let go because
they didn't have tenure and somebody's relative was waiting
in the wings for that position. NICE HUH???
