Re: Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program
Posted by Lori on 7/04/08
Hi,
I am yet another teacher who doesn't qualify for the loan
forgivenss. I am sure some of you have taught in low income,
underserved schools too. I taught in one for 4.5 years and this
did not count toward loan forgivenss. Also, my loans were taken
out before 1998.
I think it is ridiculous that they are penalizing teachers who
graduated or had loans prior to 1998. To make things worse, the
school I taught at had NO budget for supplies, so I ended up
purchasing basics-paper, pencils, pens, etc. I began keeping
detailed lists to write these costs off on my tax return.
Like Annette, I have written, called and even visited the DOE in
my state, to no avail. We need to get organized to get this
restriction taken off. Did you hear about the new loan forgivness
option for new teachers? Now they are completely forgiving people
for making 120 loan payments in succession, but these must begin
after Oct. 2007. Another shining example of how an entire
generation of highly qualified teachers are getting the shaft.
