Re: Theme

My theme for the past three years has been "Fifth Grade: It's a
Whole New World". The basic idea is that fifth grade can be
anything that you want it to be/make it, along the lines of
"Reading can take you anywhere." I start the year with rulers (do
you measure up), light bulbs (made of paper) to show our bright
ideas, skeleton keys (because the students hold the key to their
future) hanging from the ceiling. I have a variety of clocks along
the window ledge with quotes about time that I change - basically,
will you be ready in time. My bulletin board backing is maps that
I have picked up - where are you going. I also have cheap
compasses that I got at Oriental Trading that I glued to thumb
tacks, which I use on the boards.
For the time being, I am not changing the theme...most of the
teachers in my building have agreed, if we each keep a theme, and
we have a variety through our building, then the students don't
have repeated themes, and it allows us to build on and collect
more for the theme.
