When I started silent reading time, I had chaos...we were
directed to spend 30 minutes every Wednesday morning on silent
reading. The entire school was reading during this time. The
problem that I encountered was that most of my students weren't
reading. Many were playing, others were day dreaming.

Thirty minutes was to long of a time for students that weren't
prepared to sit and read.

A few years ago I read The Daily Five. The basic idea is that
you and the students need to practice reading silently. You
need to set up a procedure.

The ideas in this book took my silent reading chaos into a
worthwhile activity.
