If what you do is working for you and your colleague and for the
kids, why change? Certainly by 5th grade, kids are able to deal with
switching science/social studies and if that allows you to teach a
subject about which you care vs. a subject that you feel you don't
bring much to - why not?
There is research on everything and nothing in education - and how
would measure positive results? By life-long happiness? By
productivity in adult life? Or by more test scores on standardized tests?
Why not do your own research? Ask your students. If your students and
their parents are happy and smiling and so are you and your
colleague, it sounds to me like you're doing the right thing.
We switch several major subjects in 5th here. 5th graders these days
are more like 6th or 7th graders - our 5th graders would drive us
nuts if we kept them in the same classroom or with the same teacher
for all their major subjects.
