When I first came to 5th grade from 4th it was a whole
'nother world in regards to the pull-outs. I used to
complain in 4th grade, but it's nothing compared to what
happens in 5th. From Band, to Safeties, to Counselor
Helpers, to Library Helpers, to Guidance groups, etc., etc.,
etc.
What we do is assign a child a partner (or have the child
pick a partner) and leave a 'Missed Work' folder where their
partner places any of the worksheets into. The partners are
very good about telling you that they need an extra for their
friend. The partners also serve as the go to person to whom
the pulled-out child can seek first when needing help
explaining their missed work. My instruction continued as
normal, I didn't stop class or redo my schedule for those
students (boy, if I did we'd never get through a unit). Some
of my really super partners would even fill in worksheets or
take notes for the other child.
