I will tell you that in my fourth grade classroom - most of my
students do not write in cursive. It is not one of our
standards and with all else that has to be mastered, I can not
worry about cursive handwriting. My motto is "If I can't read
it, I can't grade it" We also do not have a grade for
handwriting on our report card. I do have students that need
extra practice to form their letters correctly and I give them
practice in small groups. My own son would not have done well
with a teacher like one your son has - he never had neat
handwriting (or spelling skills for that matter) but has gone
on to be very successful since he just signs his name on
checks and uses a computer for almost all other work. Good
luck to your son - just tell him to keep his chin up and
smile. The year will be over before we know it.
