Colleagues,
Announcing the second incarnation of CAPL, the Culturally
Authentic Pictorial Lexicon.
Available at http://capl.washjeff.edu/
CAPL is a free, online, non-commercial visual glossary
comprised of authentic photos for language and cultural
instruction and research. Created at Washington & Jefferson
College, CAPL seeks to provide teachers and learners with
high-quality authentic images for their classrooms and
teaching materials. Additionally, it provides researchers
in applied linguistics, visual cognition, and automated
image recognition with a database of high-quality
culturally authentic images they can use in their research.
At the core of CAPL is the generous creative commons
license.
Usage guidelines are available here:
http://capl.washjeff.edu/usingCAPLinclassroom.pptx
Currently, CAPL has a large German and ESL database of
photos that are constantly expanding. The following
languages are being developed and should be online in 2009.
· Arabic
· Chinese
· ESL (North American)
· French
· German
· Italian
· Japanese
· Portuguese (Brazil)
· Portuguese (Portugal)
· Russian
· Spanish (Central America & Caribbean)
· Spanish (Mexico)
· Spanish (Southern Cone)
· Spanish (Spain)
Our usage policy is simple and meant to encourage a variety
of educational uses:
The pictures in this database may be viewed, downloaded,
linked, manipulated, copied, displayed, and redistributed
free of charge for educational, non-commercial purposes as
specified by the Creative Commons license
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/us/. Please
