Re: When is your 100th day and why do Americans mark it?

I believe it started back in the 70's with Math Their Way, a
novel (no pun) approach to teaching math. MTW was all the rage
and lots of teachers jumped on the band wagon. The author of
the program died soon after and so there were no updates or
revisions. Teachers were enthusiastic about the program and
wanted to keep the momentum going. There was a newsletter and
someone came up with the idea of celebrating the 100th day of
school because 100 is a really big number to 5 year olds. The
idea grew and many of the lower grades celebrate it because it
adds some fun and excitement to math. Collections of 100 items
can be used to teach so many different math concepts and it has
sort of taken on a life of its own
