Our son chose not to go to college but instead has been working at
the local pulp/paper mill for several years. The hours are
horrible, the shifts are horrible, but the $$ is good.
Daughter chose her college when she was in 7th grade...a small
Presbyterian one about 100 miles north of us.
Knowing we would never have the $$ for it, she got the best grades
she could, joined a few things, and we all prayed. I can remember
vividly saying out loud one morning, "Well, God, if you want her at
Whitworth, you'll have to find the money, because you know we don't
have it."
Hubs lost his job when DD was a junior, which, oddly, helped in the
long run. He was out of work for nearly a year, finally landed the
job with the state that he kept for nearly 20 years.
DD applied for every grant, loan, scholarship that we heard of and
got quite a few. Whitworth, recognizing a good thing when they saw
it, came to the front door with golden coins on a silver platter,
saying, "Please, we want you at our school, here's the money!"
At least it felt like that. :)
We never paid a dime for her college education, she earned every
bit of it herself. 4 years' worth. She worked at jobs she hated,
jobs she liked, worked here at home in that paper mill every summer
(hateful conditions, especially for a pretty young girl, but the $$
is fantastic). I brag on this because she was able to pay off all
of her college debts before she got married at age 27.
I have no idea what that has to do with your retirement but it's
late and I'm too tired to erase it all. :)
Oh, another thing we've done is do away with nearly all of our
magazine subscriptions. Don't even miss 'em, really.
I hear mature voices coming up the sidewalk...it's 8:30, so these T
or T'ers must be middle school or older. Time to turn off the
porch light!
Rita--does lupis hurt? Do you have pain from it?
