how much homework do you assign?

Could you please write what you teach and how many hours of homework you typically assign each week? I am wondering how the amount I assign compares with others and if it's reasonable. Most teachers at my school seem to give little to none, which I'd like to confirm is below standards. Thanks.

If this were my child, I'd get in contact with other parents and find out if my child was spending many more hours on her homework compared to other students.

If she is putting in way more time compared to other students, she is either placed in the wrong class or too much of a perfectionist.

I asked my son how much time he put into his homework and he said about 15 hours each week. However, he can easily imagine putting in 30 hours if you do ALL the homework. He is currently taking three college credit classes.

I would talk to the teachers and ask them if it's really necessary to do all the problems. I'd ask students from previous years if they put in this many hours. It's possible she could cut her work in half and still do well on the test.

Whatever you do, make the teachers aware of your concern. If nothing else, ask them if they consult the other teachers when making assignments. I know when I teach AP classes and my students freak out because they already have a Calculus test and an College Comp test on the same day, I will reschedule my test to make things a little easier on them.

I'm asking what kind of school it is because I'm still trying to find out how much homework is assigned at different kinds of schools. If a kid has 15 hours that seems excessive.

In the case of the kid spending every weekend doing homework that is of course absurd and something is not right. You should know the assignments as they should be written down. If they're excessive, get in touch with the teacher.

As a point of comparison, kids at my school in certain ap classes are hardly ever doing homework because the teachers make it so they can get most of the work done in class. We have a block schedule with hour and a half classes but so what? I'm sure the passing rates on our ap exams are dismal.

In fact, the opposite might have been true. I gave study guides for units, and it was up to the students to work on them. Those who did so typically performed better than the others. I did not take it up, but would often refer to it in class discussions. They always had 5 class days to turn in bigger assignments, which were typically lab reports or assignments requiring research. Everyone could find time in what was actually 7 calendar days to get the work done even we we had more than 1 assignment given at a time. I would suggest that you ask the teachers to give more assignments in advance, so the students can learn to time manage around their other commitments. This practice will serve the students well in college. I also would have a conversation with teachers with regards to any assignment that took a particularly long time and ask the teacher how much time should have been spent. It will either be eye opening for the teacher or you may learn that your daughter is doing more than the teacher is expecting. Hopefully those conversations will be of help rather than just saying that it is too much. That approach might not be met well by a teacher. Rural school I am in a small, rural, high-poverty school. We do have both extremes, though--highly motivated and better-off financially as well as those who are unmotivated, poor home situations, etc.
