Re: ROTC students and discipline
Posted by Swamp Fox on 4/30/08

We have Navy JROTC at my high school. We began with a
retired Navy Captain and a retired Navy Master Chief.
Discipline with the ROTC students was always somewhat better
than with the normal population, but when the Master Chief
left, he was replaced by a retired Marine 1st SGT. Things
have markedly improved even more. I'm on good terms with
both the Captain and the 1st SGT and I know for a fact they
DO NOT abuse the kids, but they do get in their face and do
give them push-ups--never more than 10 at a time. The class
also can count for their PE credit, so they workout 3 times
per week too. I know that if I have a problem with a cadet,
I just have to mention it to either and the problem goes
away. They are also into positive reinforcement and their
first priority is to get our cadets to go to college -- they
aren't there to recruit...we have other outside recruiters
come in at lunch, etc. Overall, I'd say that ROTC is a
positive experience at my school. The only downside is that
any student can take Naval Science 1 and 2 (usually as 9th
and 10th graders). Naval Science 3 and 4 are based on
promotion and performance. So, they might start with 100
9th graders who get weeded down to 25 by their senior year.
If they are a slacker or don't perform, they
aren't "invited" to come back as upperclass leadership. So,
I guess you could say that they get to keep the ones that
are performing and drop the ones that aren't...a luxury that
most of us in the mainstream classroom don't have.
