Re: ROTC students and discipline
Posted by my experience on 5/06/08

In general, the kids that take NJROTC at our school already
have major discipline issues and are from pretty troubled
families. So, their classroom behavior is no better than
    anyone else's.

NJROTC cadets, just like athletes are required to pass classes
in order to compete against other schools. Over and over
again, the NJROTC instructors claim that the team members just
joined at the very last minute and they just didn't have time
to check their grades. It is extremely frustrating. (I used
to run the study hall for competitors who didn't make grades
and have a lot of experience in this area)Also, many kids
escape detention, study hall, or other types of corrective
measures because they hide behind NJROTC activities---trust
me, much worse than any of the athletes. The coaches are
pretty honest and I can track down an athlete. The NJROTC
instructors (and I've gone through 3 sets of them) have always
been evasive, dishonest, and really good at skirting school
    policy.

I know the program does some good for some students, but as an
outside teacher, it makes me crazy.
