Re: Depends on where you work
Posted by Catsister on 5/15/08

You will not be happy in a "tough" school district unless you
have a very strong social work interest. Period. If you do,
great. You won't mind focusing primarily on helping them
develop reading skills they should have gotten in third grade
or thinking mostly about how can you manage a class as opposed
to how you can explain your subject. You will be able to brush
it off when, the kids pretend the hand lotion you brought in
to demonstrate density is semen, or when they make genitalia
or tampons out of clay, instead of imaginary animals. (Both of
these things actually happened to me)You will understand that
they come from a bad home and you won't be disappointed that
your lesson didn't go well. You will not be angry at the kids,
you will cut them some slack becauseof their horrible
    backgrounds.

If you don't have a social work interest, you probably won't
be happy unless you get in a "good" school. You will burn out
very quickly and feel depressed about all the cool things you
would have done if you didn't have to focus so much on
    classroom management.

I don't know you, but you know you. Unless you have a
connection who can get you better students in a better
district, I don't recommend this field for anyone who's not
bleeding heart about helping people. Loving your subject is
    not enough sometimes.
