Post: Help getting through the end of the year

Posted by Mel on 5/10/08

    Hello,

I am a first year teacher (Env. Sci. and Biology) and I am
afraid I might be starting to lose control in one of my
classes. I have a few (3) students that do no longer care
about the work, have refused to do group work (or do an
extremely poor job at it), and have become behavioral
problems. This all started after April vacation and I don't
want them to distract from the rest of the class.

All year, my policy has been 3 strikes and you get a
detention. I still do that, but the detentions are not
cutting it anymore. I'm more concerned with the work ethic
than the behavior. We have 80 minute classes and there is
always group activities in my Environmental science class,
which is what they are in. I put the three of them in the
same group because if I split them up, it's not fair to the
other members of the group who do the work (group work is
graded). One of the students is failing for the quarter and
doesn't care. I cannot FORCE them to do the work. I walk
around constantly, reminding them to focus on the task and
they say they are and they will when I'm standing over
them, but I can't spend the entire class standing over
    them.

I'm finding the work ethic for most of my sophomores has
plummeted since April vacation- they don't want to do
    anything!!

How do you guys keep the kids on track until the last day
of school? I'm getting worried about the upcoming weeks :(
