Re: What are School Detentions like in High School
Posted by french teacher on 5/15/08

In our high school we have lunch-detention and not after-
school detentions. Students don’t like to stay in the school
at lunch in this beautiful weather and city. So, they try to
do what the teacher ask in order not to stay in school in so
precious time. But. Detention is a behavior education model
which I don’t like because I know people don’t change because
they feel terror. In all my experience I always try to speak
with the kid one thousand times, even if I think it is out of
limits. Conclusion (to me ): Detention works only if we add
many words + politesse + very private conversations + respect
for the student (even he is not respecting me) + help +
opportunities + call to parents (even if there is only answer
machine) + etc. Is behaving better after a detention? 85%
not. I think that some kids need more than a teacher to be
    educated.
