Re: Administrators changing seniors grades!
Posted by history teacher on 5/18/08

Ultimately it's about what's best for society - students are
but one component part of society. And yes, we all have
different opinions about what's best for society and what's
    best for students.

That your opinion is that you have been or felt you've been
'barked at' - I for one apologize - I meant no barking. It's
a thread that sparked passionate discussion and the spark may
have sounded like a bark. Again, apologies from me.

I guess from my perspective your position and your frustration
is a common one. It makes you feel bad. Don't let it.
There's a huge big picture and it's very difficult to grasp
that big picture from any one individual classroom. Focus on
the positives or, my dear, gently and kindly from this old
teacher, you cannot stay in teaching without anger and
    bitterness overtaking you.

Did anything positive happen this year? Don't let an entire
year be spoiled by one administrative decision with which you
disagree. That decision is not meant to 'dis' you or devalue
    you and your work.

We are not gatekeepers often anymore. That too must be
accepted if you are to stay in teaching and not implode or
explode. I'd suggest a book called The Peaceable Classroom to
consider what else you're actually accomplishing in your
classroom - or might be- past tests and grades. The Peaceable
Classroom is wonderful, thought-provoking reading for teachers.

'Cops' sometimes let us off with a warning though we've been
speeding. The lines and rules get smudged or fudged and I
personally am very grateful when the 'cop' doesn't write up
that ticket and lets me off with a warning.

You gave this student a warning when you wrote 'F' on the
report card. Think of it that way. Your supervisor who sees
the big picture - and maybe plays golf where there are
handicaps - took a stroke off the kid's score. No matter -
the kid still finishes well out of the money.

Sleep well and may it be a barkless summer.
