Re: Class rules to be posted
Posted by Boston HS on 8/23/08

Within the first day or two you should explain, show, and
practice the most common procedures [ie., how to enter the
class, what to do if you need to go to the bathroom, how to
leave the class, and whatever procedures you think are most
important and common] and you should also tell your students
your most important rules - be prepared to know that the
only rules most students will follow a week/month/semester
later are those rules that you actually enforce. DO NOT GIVE
RULES THAT YOU DO NOT INTEND TO OR CANNOT ENFORCE! It sucks
to have a great list of rules and then find a month later
that you've neglected to call a few students out for
breaking them and now even the "nicest" kids are breaking
your rules. Just pick the things that you think will irk you
the most. I have just a few: 1) No cell
phones/electronics/hats are to be out in my classroom. 2. No
cursing. 2) You must follow the teacher's directions at all
    times.

Definitely post your rules. Make sure that you have a way to
handle the breaking of rules and let your students know the
consequences. For example, are you going to confiscate cell
phones or just tell students to put them away a million
times (heh)? Are you going to give out detentions for cell
phones? Are you going to let students go out in the hallway
when they cry, "miss, it's my mom. I reeeallly neeeed to
talk to her" or "miss, it's my boss, I need to tell him what
time I'm coming in today." For your own sake, do not become
buddies with any students because it can make them think
that they should be able to get away with more since you
    "like them."
