Perhaps I'm the odd one here - but the best way to let students
know you care is to - well, just actually care.
They don't need to know you care on day one or day two or day
77, but when it matters, they get the word.
My friend who is the librarian has her ear to the pulse of the
student body. I've been called weird, hard, demanding, odd,
smart, stupid, funny and strict. She reports she has only once
heard me referred to as uncaring - and that student was
vigorously contradicted by the kids in the conversation.
I've been asked for letters of reccomendation by students who
failed my class, some that barely passed, and by those who flew
through my class with flying colors. Those who had a poor
performance academically seem to perceive that I know a bit
about why their academics were not up to par and view them
nonetheless as a student I can find good things to say about.
the advice about attending events off the beaten track
(wrestling and cross country), about asking about performances
singing in church or youth orchestra, or even mentioning that
they did a fine job as your waiter or waitress at the local cafe
go a long way.
But the thing that makes this possible is that you are their
TEACHER for some academic subject in which they excel or muddle
through - the reason you are in their life in the first place
Their "mood' or mindset irrelavent to their learning your
subject matter!!!
I'm not in the classroom to make their day brighter, I'm there
to instruct in my subject area. And that is the thing that
gives them structure and security.
just my rant tonight back to school
