Re: Rules for letters of recommendation
Posted by moved on on 9/04/08

Lulu, I think the questionnaire is a great idea! I
copied/pasted it and will be using it myself.

Here's a question regarding recommendations: do you feel
obligated to write them -- without compensation from
administration -- for former students when you no longer work
    at that school?

I left my last teaching position because it was part-time and
they would not make me full-time. I wrote a lot of
recommendation letters the years I was there and considered it
part of my job. Now I have moved on to a full-time position
and the first student from the old school has contacted me to
write a recommendation. I taught over 50 juniors at that
school and had many great students. If I agree to write one
for this student I'm going to feel obligated to write one for
all the deserving students I had last year that ask. Judging
from prior years, this is going to be about 15 students.

Well, the thing is I don't feel it's "part of my job" anymore.
My priority is the school I work for now and since I can't
take time away from that job to write recs, it's going to have
to be time taken away from myself and my family. So...I am
thinking of asking them to pay me (probably just the hourly
sub rate) to do this. Has anybody ever done this?
