It's true that the circumstances were beyond the students' control
but not beyond their parents'. It was a private school and parents
could have insisted on full-time faculty instead of paying
part-timers less money with no benefits but still expecting them to
take a role beyond the classroom with things like recs.

The way the one student who "found" me so far was to have his
father call the president's office. The president's sec'y called
me at home and left me a message telling me it would be most
appreciated if I would give Dad a call and find out what jr. needs
in regards to rec letters. Her message was polite and courteous
but had the same "thanks for getting on this right away" language
and tone that it would have had had I still been an employee.

So yes, I do feel this student deserves a good math rec. But I
also feel like the school is expecting me to behave as if I still
work there and that doesn't sit right with me. They can certainly
compensate me if they want to, being a private school.

After writing it all out I think I'm going to ignore the message
and if the student contacts me directly, I'll re-evaluate. He
won't have any trouble finding me. Some of his classmates have
x-ferred to the public school I now teach at
