Re: Teaching the same class five times a day

I teach Earth Science five times a day to 9th grade. I like
it and am used to it! I have read all the replies and will
agree with what many have said about focusing on the kids you
will get in each period...each will create its own dynamic
and the groups can be very, very different. It is all about
building community in each individual class, and you will
never be bored.
If you lecture from a script, it will be boring. Take that
same script and intersperse lots of questions throughout for
them to answer and get engaged. One easy thing to do is take
a "poll" of "who has seen/heard of this before?" or relate it
to their everyday. Make Class Participation a grade if you
need to. I will try to incorporate a few open-ended questions
to spur some discussion. I asked them last week if they
thought the greenhouse effect was a good or bad thing, and
why. I was impressed with the depth of thought in their
answers and opinions, esp. so early in the year.
I do have a 6th class (seniors) which is a different prep,
and it is a good break in the day, even with the extra work.
Some of the kids I taught as freshmen are beginning to cycle
through. It is neat to see them older, wiser (somewhat!), and
rapport with them has already been established.
