Post: Question about communicating
Posted by: ? on 10/20/09
I've posted on the main board but I know that you guys will
understand better.
This might be a little complicated so bear with me. I've
changed the names obviously but also the courses just to
make it easier. Teacher A teaches Whatever 1 and I teach
Whatever 2. As a sophomore teacher in our state, I am
judged on the test scores that include what she teaches as
well as what I teach. There is no standardized state test
at her grade. And the subject she teaches is the one our
kids don't do well on at all.
There is an additional bonus program where A LOT of money
can be earned-thousands of dollars. So she has decided that
she will take time away from Whatever 1 to teach other
content from a previous grade so that her kids will do well
on an achievement test so she can earn the bonus.
I have issues with this. Our kids, all through HS, do worst
in her areas. This dogs them 10th grade, 11th grade and
12th for some. In addition, I am being judged on what she
does or does not teach. I'm not as concerned about the
bonus but I am concerned about looking bad. I'm not blaming
her for the kids' performance but I know it can't do good to
spend less time teaching a subject in which our kids are
deficient. I'd really like to ask her, or ask the
department so he can broach the subject, if it wouldn't
really be best if she stuck to her actual curriculum as
outlined by the state standards and the district plans. She
has said this in front of APs and they didn't say anything.
I'm sure they didn't think about how it will affect our
scores. What would be the best way to try to talk about this?
