Post: Im a student with a problem...fighting?

Im in 11th grade, and i've always been taught (whether
through teachers, parents, religion, etc) that fighting is
never the best way...
This kid in my grade has "picked" on me (continually called
me a pussy, talked shi* about me to my friends, etc).
He "challenged" me to a fight (told me to "do somthing
about it" and shoved me). I told him their was no point,
and walked away. Alot of people give me crap about it, and
I dont know what to do. I've tried reasoning with him,
apologizing for anything ive done (I guess hes mad at me
cuz I "used to talk shi* about him), and pointing out how
useless it is, but he continues to turn alot of friends
(and non-friends) against me. Is it time to fight?
ps. keep in mind, i'm not gonna say for sure i could "take
him" in a fight, but he isnt stronger than me by any means.
