Someone privately replied (to the mailing list)
that "exponential notation is used when dealing with very
large or very small numbers. Astronomy and microbiology both
use exponential notation."
That person is confusing "exponential notation"
with "scientific notation" in which numbers are written in
the style "a times ten to the nth power" where 1 < a <
10 and n is an integer (whole number or its opposite).
I'm interpreting your request as seeking real-life examples
where exponents are used.
Can you please clarify exactly what you're after?
