I totally agree with the year-round system. I am a grad student
at University of Pittsburgh in Library Science to become a School
Librarian and we work on a trimester system. Many parts of the
world divide the year in a similar way with a slightly longer
break in the summer. The current US system is way out of date
and not in the best interest of children or learning. Research
has refuted our system as out dated time and time again. The
"summer lag" is detrimental to learning -- that's why so many
parents end up sending their kids to remedial programs. A system
that breaks up our year so that we have a shorter summer vacation
and slightly longer breaks (maybe 2 weeks) between the other 2
terms would not only help alleviate stress, but also enhance
learning. We could eliminate many of the nonsense 1 day and half
day breaks and get more work done with students by maintaining
consistency through the year. It's time to think of school in
terms of what is best for children and learning.
