Post: Maternity Leave question--head is spinning--maybe one of you

Posted by can help! on 5/08/08

I remember some posts not too long ago about Maternity
leave, but I wasn't paying much attention, so I apologize
if this is a repeat. I'll be taking leave next year, and
I just talked with my superintendant today. He is SO
nice, and basically I can take as long as I want and still
have my job back. Off course, all that time won't be
paid. This is where I got totally confused (and it was
that type of confusion where you don't even really have a
good question to ask to get clarification, if you know
    what I mean!)
Basically, I am trying to figure out how much PAID time
I get AND how much time I am entitled WITH my health
benefits. He talked a lot about FMLA. I know FMLA is not
paid time, but is it time that my company has to still
give me benefits (meaning, I do NOT have to pay a Cobra)?
Or do I have to pay for benefits from the company then?
Also, for some reason I thought there was a pretty
standard 6 week materntity leave where companies had to
pay at least part of a person's salary?? Am I totally off
on this. He just mentioned that I could use all my accum.
sick/vacation days for paid time. Nothing about a paid
materntiy leave--although he was very open in admitting
that he didn't understant it all either! I found
something on the internet that suggested it--Maternity
    Protection Convention???
Sorry for all these questions. Is there anyone out
there who was on leave recently who could help clarify.
Basically, I am planning to take about 4 months
regardless. I am guaranteed my job back, so that is not
the issue. I am just trying to figure out how much of
that will be paid and how much of that I will be covered
by benefits (without having to pay for them). Goodness,
my head is just spinning!! Thanks for any help!!
