Re: Thinking of moving to first grade

It's been about 17 years since I taught first grade, but I
remember it being so much harder than K! I realized that it
was harder when I moved to K. I think that at the time
anyway, the standards for K were lower, though. My
impression of first is that they have to know SO much more at
the end of the year, yet they are not much more mature than
in K. There is more sitting and more worksheets, and less
help (like volunteers) at least in my school. K teachers at
my school now also have an aide, whereas first teachers
don't. It was also a much longer day to be in charge of a
group, since at the time we were half day K, but we only had
to teach the morning or the afternoon class, and assist the
other teacher with the opposite scheduled class. The bad
thing of course about it was that I had to share a room in K
and team closely with another teacher, which was a fairly
hard transition for me. I felt my creativity was just
squelched. But after a while, I learned to team and still be
creative. I have thought recently about looping or switching
to first sometimes. Then I regain my sanity! Heidi
