    Post: Math Calendar Books

    Posted by Heidi on 5/10/08

Hi! Does anyone here do a calendar book with their kids? I
have grown to really like our calendar book time. The kids
fill in their calendars (they are in binders) at the same
time that I fill in mine. They also fill in their odds and
evens chart, their How Many Days In School chart, Zero Hero
Chart, Tally Chart, and Word Family of the Week chart. We
have added in and out other things like weather graphs and
probability graphs, and sight word of the day charts.
Lately, we have been working on a word problem of the day,
too. I tell a math story problem, and they make a picture
and write an equation to go with it. Then they write an "A"
if they used addition and an "S" for subtraction. It really
is good practice for them. I expect them to do quite well
on their mathematical reasoning tests this year. Yeah!

One thing that helps is that they each have a zippered
pouch with crayons, pencil and an eraser in their calendar
    books.

That way, I don't have to pass out or collect anything. I
also have them put their calendar books by group around the
room in separate tubs, so that when it is time to get the
books, I don't have everyone waiting while I pass them out,
nor do I have everyone all crowded around one single spot
to find their own. The red groups' folders are in one
corner, the blue groups' folders are in another, etc. It
has made it so easy to manage!
