Re: Do your kids sometimes fib when filling in graphs?
    Posted by Jacque/WA/K-1/nbct 2006 on 5/10/08

I think you have to remember that this age group does not
truly understand 'fibbing' or 'lying'. They have a great need
to be like their friends, indeed, having anything the 'same'
as their peers is the basis of friendships. Ever notice how
delighted they are when they wear the same shirt/shoes/pants?

Sometimes I think it is a very human trait to want to be on
the 'winning' team. Even adults with the presidential
election will change their votes to go with whoever the
'winning' candidate is--it's why people got upset over
announcing results from the East Coast before the West Coast
has finished voting. It may very well influence the vote.

The only way around it is to have the vote more private, but
then you lose the value of them seeing/reading the names of
their friends and the choices to be made.

I try to tell them that it is not about 'winning' or 'losing'
that when we gather data, we are seeking information. After
mine have done several 'surveys' in their journals they begin
    to see what I mean.
