Hi Salty! First off, I can tell you, I haven't had to teach
gym for over 28+ years but, you seem to need some immediate
help so I went to my district's PE curriculum for this time
of year with K. I've pasted it below. The fantastic gym
teacher at my school has many different sized circles and
lines on the floor for various things. She has one color dots
for the children to immediately go to upon entering the gym.
(They just go in and sit on a yellow dot.) She takes roll and
gives them instructions about what they will do. This is
where she demonstrates the task(s) they will be learning that
day. They practice the skill and then, when she deems it they
are assessed on the ability to perform the skill. (Lots of
calming things happen when they have to move to a dot and sit
down!)
She has a very large circle where she tells the children to go
for walking around and warming up their muscles. They walk
behind her initially then she lets them do it by themselves.
She has lines around the periphery of the gym for running.
I have seen her pair the kids for ball work, tossing balls
from one partner to another in various demonstrated ways.
After practicing this she observes and rates them for
remedial work if needed. She has done this for years and has
it down to a science!
After her procedures and rules are in place (lots of safety
issues!) I think (not sure because I'm not there but you can
change it around as you see fit) They warm up by walking or
skipping or hopping - some kind of large movement. She has
them go to the dots for instruction for about 5 minutes. She
teaches (through demonstration) a skill for 5-10 minutes. She
has some children some up and try it so everyone knows what to
do. Then she has them do it. (about 10-15 minutes) I think
she may teach a second skill or a different way to use the
equipment for a different skill for 5-10 minutes Goes through
the same demo, practice. Put the equipment away in a very
structured way Then she has them run around the periphery.
She does some kind of cool down
I hope this helps! I know I have done Hap Palmer songs
(Popcorn/Boogie Walk) and lots of things with bean
bags...walking on a line with the bean bag on your hand -
palm up then down, on the shoulder, on the foot and on the
head.
I hope this helps! Managing 30 takes lots of structure and you
must have a broad view of the where of things. (where will
they go if they need a time out, if they don't have sneakers
on, etc. what kind of consequences will there be and for how
long (keep in mind no child should be out of gym for more than
5 or 6 minutes but, be sure to time it! They are the very
ones who need that exercise- it helps them regulate their
bodies and stimulates their brains...as it does for all
children!
Here is my district's curriculum for the last 10 weeks. I hope
this helps! Just remember to keep them moving and do it
safely! Have fun!

Demonstrate at least 2 flexibility exercises for the lower
body and 2 for upper body. Perform the shuttle run. Discuss
