I am curious how half time K teachers are dealing with all
of these common core mandates when they have the kids half
day?
I just read through the expectations for math right now and
I want to cry! I used to teach with play time, circle time,
letter people, math their way..... now no snack, no play
time, all worksheets ......
I have kids say all the time," when can we play?" I asked
my team leader how do I answer that. She said to say, " you
had that in preschool... or you can when you get home. You
are only here half a day!" She said that even 5th graders
would choose to play if given the chance. Everyone wants to
play. Who would CHOOSE work if life could all be about
playing? In school it is work. ( she gets the pressure to
get our reading and math scores up ).
She said if the kids go home and watch TV since mom or
babysitter don't play with them, that is not our problem.
I also heard that the PARCC test has a test of K? Is that
true? So my kids who cant sit still more than 10 min and
have no desire to work have to take a test?
what to do? It makes me want to truly walk away. I am
teaching first grade ( even some second grade) material to
five year olds!!
