Re: Organizing School Library

I am the librarian at a small Catholic school (Pre-k through 8th) in Ponchatoula, LA. From what I have read some of the other librarians may disagree with the way my library is organized, but it works for our school. We are big into the AR program and mostly what the children read are AR books. We have the easy readers (fiction pictures books pre-1st level and up) labeled with E and the fisrt three letters of the author's last name. They also have AR colored labels from DEMCO and an AR label stating the quiz number, book level, # of points, etc. These fiction picture books are all in a section together, but they are organized according to level (color). All of the Pre-1st levels are on one shelf. The 1st level on another set of shelves. 2nd level on another set. 3rd on another and finally 4th and up on another (we don't purchase a lot of picture books in these levels). In the same section, which the kids call "the little kid section", there are shelves which contain 2nd and 3rd level fiction chapter books(organized according to call #) and also series of 2nd and 3rd level fiction chapter books (Junie B., Geronimo Stilton, Magic Treehouse, Nancy Drew Notebooks, ABC mysteries, bailey school kids, etc.) Our next section of the library, dubbed "The big kid section", contains 4th level through 8th fiction chapter books organized by call #. We then have a section of 4th level through 8th level series (series of unfortunate events, harry potter, animal ark, guardians of g'hoole, hank zipzer, nancy drew, hardy boys, etc). We then have a small YA (Young Adult) section with slightly more mature books which only 6th grade and up may check out. The next section we have Nonfiction according to Dewey. At the end of the Non-ficiton is our growing AR nonfiction shelves for all nonfiction AR books 1st level all the way to 8th with the lower levels on the lower shelves. Then we have our reference books, special religious books, and a special louisiana section. Just this year I took the "little kid section" and put (large Letter) colored labels (to match the AR colors) of the first letter of the author's last name at the very top of the spine of every book. This helps my little ones keep their section more organized. Before they had a hard time figuring out where to put the unwanted books back. Now they only have to alphabetize by one letter and it really cut down on the headache and horror of reshelving after my lower grade classes. I know most of you believe that the students should read for the joy of reading and not just to get AR points, but the kids figure out that they really enjoy reading when they get into the AR system. Anyway, I just thought I would share because it sounds like you have a big job ahead of you. Good Luck!
