    Most school libraries use the Dewey Decimal Classification
    system. Is there any chance you could take a beginning
    cataloging and classification course before you start the job?
    It's a big subject that probably can't be covered on a chat
    board. (And I'd definitely agree that shelving by reading
    level isn't the best option!)

    You might take a look at Libraries Unlimited. They published
    library literature and might have something relevant.
