Using wikipedia as a sole source is indeed very bad practice, but it has become an excellent place to find starting points for a lot of research, even at the graduate school level. For controversial topics, reading the discussion pages associated with the main page can lead kids into realizing that there are multiple opinions and give them some things to look for elsewhere. Wikipedia's ease of editing by anyone tends to result in more balanced presentation than other web sources, at least on topics that a number of people care about, though at any given moment a page may be vandalized. Overall, I've been quite impressed by the quality of the information I've found on Wikipedia---it seems far more balanced and accurate than the textbooks sold for elementary and middle school students, which are often horribly inaccurate and out-of-date.
