    Post: Book care/Library Criminals Lesson

Posted by Mary Ellen on 9/03/08

I do a lesson for Kindergarten it could probably be
tweaked for older grades. It's called Library Criminals.
I intoduce some friends that didn't take very good care of
their library books. They are the Library Criminals.
I hold up a character drawn on oak tag, which is glued
onto a popsicle stick.( I drew funny faces on them).
Dirty Gerty- Dirty Gerty went outside to play and got very
dirty. She decided to go in the house and read her library
book. But she forgot to wash her hands, her book got all
dirty. Dirty Gerty didn't make a very good choice.
Then we have Chipper the Ripper- Who can guess what
Chipper the Ripper did to his library book? (He ripped his
book)...That's right he didn't carefully turn the pages of
his book and he ripped it!!
My next friend is Gooey Looey- He had a peanut butter and
jelly sandwich, then he decided to read his book. He got
his book all sticky!! Gooey Looey didn't make a very good
    choice either.
My last friend is Susie Scribble- Who can tell me what
Susie Scribble did?( she wrote in her book) she didn't
make a very good choice either.
Then I go over library rules
-Show student how to carefully turn pages
-Keep book in a safe place at home (maybe backpack)
    -We don't write in books.
-Make sure our hands are clean, never eat while looking at
    a book.
-Show students how to carry books in the hall (at our sides
tucked under our arms or give it a hug.)
    - Make sure to return the book next week.
Then I show them some books that were returned to the
library damaged. I have some books that are
ripped, scribbled in and dirty. I play this up a little.
The students are usually pretty surprised to see damaged
    books.
Then I would read a story and discuss.
A cute song to use when lining up goes like this(to the
    tune of Jingle Bells)
Hug your book hug your book
    very carefully
Down the hall and back to class
    as quiet as can be!
Hopes this helps thanks to all for your book suggestions!
